rendered designs

Image
Below are the finished rendered designs. i wanted to keep with an occult and sophisticated horror theme throughout the designs. Im really happy with the outcomes and i feel because i was really good at managing my time for this brief i was able to do a lot more. I am proud of the finish on all designs but if i had a little more time i may have explored other areas bar the tattoo style/occult and sophisticated horror.  this design i changed a bit from the drawing as it didn't work well land although it looks better now i still feel it looked better on paper than on screen.  I'm really happy with this gin reaper design and after scrapping the barbed wire it worked a whole lot better as i could make the reaper bigger and fill more of the space up. also by making it coloured it help it stand out from the background.  this survival mode design was inspired by old animal books which contain small illustrative sketches of the animals and an artist called

finished sketches/designs

Image
Below are finished sketches ready to go onto the computer and get finished.  these designs were of a range of birds from ravens to crows and eagles and i wanted to create a label with either a raven or crow as they can symbolise death and this fitted into an occult theme which i was interested in pursuing.  again sticking with the occult them i designed a skull for a raven to stand upon and also experimented with the typeface for that label. when drawing birds i thought of the plague doctors and thought that would again fit into the occult/horror them. also designed a antelope head which i thought could work well on a label as a line drawing as animals are popular on alcohol labels.  again looking into the gin reaper idea i decided to add the wire to the curved blade design and also drew a creepy fortune teller.  taking that fortune teller design further i added in roses, a body, satan's heads and the crystal ball as i felt the head on

development sketches of ideas

Below are some initial idea sketches: This design i feel would work for a craft beer e.g. 'Bowa Beer' but for a spirit or wine i don't think it would suit. This initial design was inspired flash tattoo drawings and i wanted to encompass a living and a dead aspect, hence the skull and the snake.   this design was a follow on from the Bowa Beer and instead of the skull i added a sword and changed to a vodka, naming it Venom Vodka as i was going for an aggressive and mean feel.  this design i wanted to be called poison as i wanted it to be a very strong and lethal spirit for young adults. the design i don't think would work for a label but the concept was to create a label with a sense of danger.   this wasn't a finished design but i was drawing skulls to try and get a feel for the style i wanted to go in. this particular skull i thought could have elements coming out of the open hole. After these initial concepts I wanted to t

lice4life

Through social media i cam cross an artist who calls himself 'Lice4Life'. This artist heavily inspired me through his loose creative artwork. Below is a few examples of his work: I hope to create an alcoholic label which uses elements of the style Lice4Life works in. The overlapping line drawings create depth to the image add to this embossing and foils for my label I'm sure it could create a visually stunning design.

target audience

Image
My target audience for this brief is going to be young adults aged between 20 and 25 yrs of age. I want to create two designs which communicate with the various sub-cultures we have in our society today. From punks to skaters, to hipsters and bikers. For this project i have been heavily influenced by the tattoo industry and more specifically traditional tattoo designs. I want to mix this style with sophisticated horror and mystic styled designs to produce eye catching, interesting and current labels which stand out on the shelf.

Current trends in wine and spirits labels

Image
Textured stocks: Textured materials like dappled, micro-textured, linen and vellum are becoming more and more popular in the wine and spirits industry. These materials handle embossing and foils very well, creating an unforgettable canvas for design. Intricate Die Cuts: Gone are the days of conventional square, rectangle or circular labels. Materials nowadays allow for intricate die cuts and unique label shapes. This ability which materials have allows designers creative license to push the boundaries in label design.  Multiple Labels:  Designers are re-imagining label sizes and again materials this day in age allow for the perfect canvas for such creativity. From adjacent oversized and undersized labels to neck and cap labels to back labels design to be seen trough glass. Multiple labels offer a sophisticated look that provides shelf appeal.  ^ averydennison.com/newsroom As millennial wine drinkers continue t

History of Labels

Image
Paper labels have been used to identify products since the early 1880's. introduced to America by European artists, this profession became known as lithography, the first commercial art. the goal was simple - 'catch the consumers eyes/attention'. in the early 1930's, entrepreneur Robert Avery (mentioned in previous post) invented the worlds first adhesive label. this label came with a paper surface with a coat of adhesive and then a liner which had a special silicone coating was stuck onto the adhesive. in the early 80's the inkjet printer was invented - thus changing the future of labelling. as the inkjet printer began to commercialise people started to print their own labels as it was cheaper. people were using Microsoft Windows as it included a label template in their programme. this meant millions of people were able to create their own labels for a fraction of the cost. not long after the fist laser printer was invented by Gary Starkweather. the laser

History of Avery Dennison

Image
The Avery Dennison story started in 1935 when Robert Avery invented the worlds first adhesive label. He started off with a few spare parts a $100 loan and one great idea. Avery invented a smarter way for companies to price their products and from this he went on to pioneer the labelling industry. In 1990 Avery international merged with Dennison manufacturing to become Avery Dennison. Design any label/brand that fits within the label dimensions of 95x130mm. Please allow for 3mm bleed all round. Take into account the papers/materials you are using, key attributes and limitations. 'Enhance the Experience' is the theme but could be any subject, as long as the words 'Enhance the Experience' are on the label.  - 2 designs  - 1 for each type of paper you are supplied. the two papers i have been supplied are Martele black and Skinny white. I feel by having a white and a black material to work with it allows me to produce two contrasting designs and lets me be as creative as possible. Below are photos of the material.

My Portfolio

Image
After looking at different types of physical portfolio's i have created a mood board (below) of different styles which i have drawn inspiration from. Below i have dissected my mood board and started talking about some of the images.  I now need to start collating work which i want to put in my portfolio. I will then print them out and put them i a certain order. Once i am happy i will then start to create my portfolio book for real and there are many websites which do this but i need to be 100% sure about the designs before i pay to have them printed and sent to me.

Portfolio's

In this lecture we spoke mainly about portfolio's. “The Portfolio is a creative act, showing your skills and imagination. It is also an act of communication and a tool for self-promotion. Demonstrate originality and inventiveness, but also accept the restrictions and conventions of professionalism, and show that you can get your ideas across in terms that working artists/designers can understand.” Harold Linton Portfolio Contents:  10-12 pieces of work MAX! Brief description of the project, your thinking behind it etc. Create more than 12 so that you can adapt your portfolio. Show Live/commissioned projects as these are more important to recruiters. Order your portfolio so that every other page has something amazing. Start and end your portfolio with your strongest work. Show process sketches - not on all the designs, only a few.    When talking through your portfolio talk proudly and confidently. Don't show anything you are not proud of or any

How do designers promote themselves online?

Image
This day in age everything is online and everyone uses it, so what better place is there to try and promote yourself and your work. By having an online presence you can reach more people, more countries, and get more work than if you just stuck a flyer in a shop window. There are so many platforms to launch yourself off of online and its really easy to do so. So many artists, photographers and designers are getting noticed which wouldn't have before all because of their internet presence. when researching designers and how they promote themselves online one of the biggest ways was social media. Near enough everyone uses social media and for designers this is a god send. Particularly Instagram as its all bout pictures and showing them off on your profile. This is perfect for designers as they can post as many pictures as they want, plus videos and everyone can easily access them as all images are in one place. There isn't any messing around with different folders etc. you can
